Colour temperature can be matched to the room: warm white (2700-3000K) for living rooms and bedrooms, neutral (4000K) for kitchens and bathrooms, cool (6000K+) for workspaces.
The choice depends primarily on the room and its function. A living room needs a central fixture - chandelier or ceiling light - supplemented with accent lighting from wall lights or lamps. A bathroom requires a moisture-protected fixture with a minimum IP44 rating. A bedroom works best with warm, dimmed light from a bedside or table lamp.
Room size also matters: for spaces up to 15 sq.m. a ceiling light or small chandelier is sufficient, while larger rooms benefit from a bigger model or a combination of several fixtures. As a guide for light output: 300-500 lumens per sq.m. for a living room, 100-300 lm/sq.m. for a bedroom and 500+ lm/sq.m. for a kitchen or bathroom.
